The Great River Road is a Scenic Byway and an All-American Road that follows the Mississippi River over 3,000-miles from Lake Itasca, Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. It passes through 10 states along the way, covering both the east and west side of the River. Iowa is one of the 10 states.
Louisa County is one of 10 Iowa Counties that have the Mighty Mississippi River as its eastern border. The Mississippi River is, has been and hopefully always will be a focal point of the United States. We are proud to have this amazing natural resource in our backyard and invite you to come an explore its many moods.
At times the Mississippi is as smooth as glass while other times it is raging out of its banks. The Great River Road follows the River, often taking the high-road, offering spectacular views.
